Story-Time: Omega Lighting 92 Mission Change - 1992
When a unit deploys to conduct a specific mission, that mission may change based on the situation. Once while serving in the U.S. Army Rangers, we deployed to the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) at Ft Chaffee, Arkansas, for an exercise dubbed “Omega Lightning.” 3rd Rangers trained tough and realistic. Regardless of our garrison specialty, everyone was a Ranger first and that was reflected in the due diligence of leadership to ensure we conducted war-time mission training.
We were assigned to the Casualty Collection Point (CCP) team and I was with Bravo Company and that training was one of my best memories at Bat.
The Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) was the home of the fictitious Cortina Island wargame scenario. Davis Army Airfield, Oklahoma, was the launching pad for raids to free captured hostages on Cortina on the JRTC.
I was assigned to the Casualty Collection Point (CCP) Team attached to Bravo Company. Alpha Co. was the main effort on an attack, B Co. was in support, and C Co. was in reserve. After several days in the area of operations in the hilly Arkansasian backwoods, one of the hardest days of my Ranger life (in a training context) was experienced when a member of our unit was captured.

Every critical piece of mission data was written on his forearm to include PZs, LZs, times, and frequencies – the jackpot of intelligence needed for the Opposing Force (OPFOR) to be waiting with anti-aircraft weapons to catch C Co. coming in via Chinook CH-47s and wipe out the entire company.
Overlays: Layers of critical information. In the spiritual battles we are fighting, God provided much needed intelligence and guidance to understand enemy maneuver.
The original mission was aborted, and we were diverted to the make-believe kill zone where over 150 fictionally slaughtered Rangers were waiting for evacuation. We evacuated every last casualty down big hills and through the elephant grass well into the dark night.
I imagined the real-world catastrophe it could have been with real intelligence lost in real mean men’s hands. The training intended to ensure the unit practices Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) was a real learning event, and we gained great experience with the challenge of mass casualty evacuation.
This is not to brag, I give all glory to God. He is the One who placed me surrounded by an awesome group of men in our section. I received an award of which I am proud of recommended from the Bravo Company First Sergeant.
Hindsight. It was the leadership forced the full evacuation of the 150 casualties helped prepare mentally and physically – not too long after we ended up in Somalia for another pivotal event. That year before Somalia we trained really hard which helped us be better prepared.

This scenario comparison is a far stretch from the mission change caused by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. But in simplistic terms, I can correlate the difficulty our Commander had to make a new plan, issue new orders, conduct reconnaissance, and synchronize the efforts to meet the new objective – to save as many Rangers as possible.
A key point to understand about this change of mission with requirements for the Commander to issue a new plan to get His people to the finish line. God’s new plan would take humanity through several phases/ages (i.e., the Age of Human Government, The Age of Promise, The Dispensation-of-the-Law, The Age of Grace, etc).
The true soldiers of God’s Army (i.e., the prophets as messengers and His Angels as scouts) have been identified, and It is Written for use to “be wary of those come in My name; they will deceive even the elect” (Matt. 24:24, KJV).
These most likely will not be easily identified enemy-type figures; these will be wolves blended in with the sheep. Perhaps may will be popular TV preachers and far-left or -right political figures who have gained the trust of their constituents because their words deceive “even the elect.”

We may not be prophets, but we do not have to be. Remember there is a blessing bonus for those who read and hear the “words of this prophecy” (Rev. 1:3). On 3 October 1993, during the battle of Mogadishu, Randy Shugart and Gary Gordon were special operators of a Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) Team. They knowingly committed to their fatal insertion of a hot landing zone laying down their lives for their fellow brothers.
CSAR – Christ’s Search & Rescue: Now we are on a different kind of mission. Once you become saved, it must be a primary objective to win souls for Christ daily. The proof of the Bible is in the fulfillment of the prophecies against mind-boggling odds. Wake up and smell the truth. Seek the salvation of the children of God and find souls for Him. If you miss the rapture and are now reading this trying to figure out what happened, and some affluent individual is telling you must take his mark to buy, sell, or die – this was foretold. ACCEPT YOUR MISSION FROM GOD. Just like Randy and Gary knew that commitment to an option in which they knew their destiny would require potential total sacrifice. Likewise, remember, if you are faced with a fate which was foretold, how much more proof do you need?

The events in Somalia became a critical scenario resulting in many changes and additions to Army manuals and fighting doctrine.
It also changed the political process due to the failure of Executive Branch leaders to approve armor the Task Force Ranger leadership requested to support back-up and prevent a situation in which light infantry troops could be stranded – which is exactly what happened.

Task Force Ranger Background
On 3 October 1993, TF Ranger descended on the Olympic Hotel in Mogadishu to capture key members of Aideed’s group. As Rangers established security around the hotel, helicopters loitered to provide support. Other U.S. Special Operations Soldiers entered the building and took custody of Aideed's operatives. Soon small arms fire began, wounding several members of the security team.
The SNA had reacted a few minutes faster than in previous raids. At that moment, the U.S. ground convoy pulled up, ready to extract the team and its prisoners. Then SNA forces shot down one of the hovering helicopters. Rangers and Air Force personnel secured the crash site only 300 meters from the hotel. But when a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) hit a second helicopter, it crashed 3 kilometers away. A ground rescue attempt of this crew failed, but two U.S. Special Operations Soldiers in another helicopter saw growing numbers of SNA approaching the crash site and volunteered to attempt a rescue. They landed near the downed helicopter, but the aircraft that inserted them was hit by RPG fire and had to withdraw.

With no air cover and little hope of rescue, MSG Gary Gordon and SFC Randall Shughart defended the downed crew against overwhelming numbers of SNA gunmen. They were killed, but the pilot survived. MSG Gordon and SFC Shughart received the Medal of Honor posthumously. As darkness fell, TF Ranger Soldiers near the hotel and the first crash site were constantly attacked by SNA forces. Ammunition, water, and medical supplies were running dangerously low, and many were wounded. Pakistani and Malaysian armor joined American infantry and Rangers in forming two relief columns to break through to the surrounding Task Force Ranger Soldiers. After fighting street by street for two hours, the relief forces found and evacuated the Soldiers from the raid and first crash site but found no one at the second crash site. The mission captured several SNA leaders; 18 Americans died, and 84 were wounded. But those who fought there refused to leave any of their fellow Soldiers behind (FM 7-21.13, The Soldier’s Guide, 2004, pg. 2-53 to 2-54).
